The first demonstration of laser action in ruby was made in 1960 by T. H. Maiman of Hughes Research Laboratories, USA. Many laboratories worldwide began the search for lasers using different materials, operating at different wavelengths. In the UK, academia, industry and the central laboratories took up the challenge from the earliest days to develop these systems for a broad range of applications. This historical review looks at the contribution the UK has made to the advancement of the technology, the development of systems and components and their exploitation over the last 60 years.

Objective:
To develop an online food composition database of locally consumed foods among an Indigenous population in south-western Uganda.
Design:Using a community-based approach and collaboration with local nutritionists, we collected a list of foods for inclusion in the database through focus group discussions, an individual dietary survey and markets and shops assessment. The food database was then created using seven steps: identification of foods for inclusion in the database; initial data cleaning and removal of duplicate items; linkage of foods to existing generic food composition tables; mapping and calculation of the nutrient content of recipes and foods; allocating portion sizes and accompanying foods; quality checks with local and international nutritionists; and translation into relevant local languages.
Setting:Kanungu District, south-western Uganda.
Participants:Seventy-four participants, 36 Indigenous Batwa and 38 Bakiga, were randomly selected and interviewed to inform the development of a food list prior the construction of the food database.
Results:We developed an online food database for south-western Uganda including 148 commonly consumed foods complete with values for 120 micronutrients and macronutrients. This was for use with the online dietary assessment tool myfood24. Of the locally reported foods included, 56 % (n 82 items) of the items were already available in the myfood24 database, while 25 % (n 37 items) were found in existing Ugandan and Tanzanian food databases, 18 % (n 27 items) came from generated recipes and 1 % (n 2 items) from food packaging labels.
Conclusion:Locally relevant food databases are sparse for African Indigenous communities. Here, we created a tool that can be used for assessing food intake and for tracking undernutrition among the communities living in Kanungu District. This will help to develop locally relevant food and nutrition policies.

Since the publication of “A Compendium of Strategies to Prevent Healthcare-Associated Infections in Acute Care Hospitals” in 2008, prevention of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) has become a national priority. Despite improvements, preventable HAIs continue to occur. The 2014 updates to the Compendium were created to provide acute care hospitals with up-to-date, practical, expert guidance to assist in prioritizing and implementing their HAI prevention efforts. They are the product of a highly collaborative effort led by the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA), the American Hospital Association (AHA), the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), and The Joint Commission, with major contributions from representatives of a number of organizations and societies with content expertise, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention(CDC), the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (PIDS), the Society for Critical Care Medicine (SCCM), the Society for Hospital Medicine (SHM), and the Surgical Infection Society (SIS).

We present the results of an effort to model recent HST eclipse observations of the wind-formed C, ɪv 1550Å resonance line in the high-inclination nova-like variable UX UMa (Mason et al. 1995, Baptista et al. 1995). Within the framework of a simple kinematic model, in which the outflow is described as a rotating, biconical accretion disk wind (Knigge et al. 1995), we are able to reproduce not only the shapes and strengths of the observed line profiles both away from and during eclipse, but also most of the detailed behaviour of different parts of the line (blue wing, line centre and red wing) as a function of orbital phase (Figure 1).
The most important result of our modeling is that it strongly suggests the presence of a vertically extended (H ~ few × 10 RWD), relatively dense (ne ~ 1013 cm−3) and only slowly-outflowing (υpoloidal << υescape) transition region between the disk photosphere and the fast-moving wind. Thus the best current data already demand that the simplified picture of accretion disks and winds as quasi-independent physical phenomena should be replaced by a unified theory of accretion disk atmospheres. It may be important in this context that, barring strong contamination of the observed C ɪv wind line by an underlying disk-formed component, the evidence for rotation in the outflow is unambiguous: the observed line flux light curves clearly exhibit a rotational disturbance that is well matched by our simple model of a rotating disk wind.

We present preliminary results of a modelling campaign based on HST eclipse observations of the wind-formed C IV resonance line in the eclipsing nova-like variable UX UMa. Within the framework of a simple kinematic accretion disk wind model, we are currently able to reproduce the shapes (but not the strengths) of the observed line profiles away from and during eclipse, as well as the behaviour of the integrated line flux light curve. The most important aspect of our modelling is that it suggests the presence of a vertically extended, relatively dense and slow moving transition region between the disk photosphere and the fast wind.
